NewPaper Sites as resources

By: JSS

Ø      1. Online newspapers-advantages and disadvantages

Newspapers are still a great resource for job openings.  Most of the larger and regional players have online job boards as a component of the Internet presence, these usually include the jobs that were printed in the newspapers fed to the online property as well as online only postings.  The newspaper sites tend to be strong regional players, sometimes offering the most comprehensive coverage for certain areas.  Additionally, large employers often post expensive display ads for important or multiple positions.  Smaller companies also tend to use regional newspapers for their local coverage and because they tend to be cheaper than an ad posted in one of the larger national job boards like Monster or Hotjobs, by doing so they get a printed add usually on a Sunday or maybe a specific day of the week that focuses on positions or industries as well as an online posting 2 for 1. As a job seeker keep in mind that newspaper advertising is usually charged by the line (for print) so the ads from print that are also posted online are usually much smaller than a traditional full Internet job posting.  Therefore searching by job title or position type in the keyword area should produce the most responses.

Pros

  • Usually provide strong local and regional coverage
  • Usually include most jobs posted in the newspaper
  • Usually a good source for local career events like job fairs, expos etc.
  • Usually have fresh career content from their staff writers
  • More efficient then reading the newspaper.

Cons

  • Limited geographic coverage
  • Smaller sites have limiter job seeker tools
  • Do not usually include a significant % of Internet only job postings
  • Generally find more fax numbers or urls than direct emails to the recruiter or hiring manager usually found on Internet job boards, jobseekers may need to use the services of a online faxing service, www.faxresume.com is probably the best one out there.
  • May not contain a large number of postings.
